Occupational Illness

An occupational illness is defined as any abnormal condition or disorder resulting from a non-instantaneous event or exposure in the work environment. In order for an illness to be work-related supporting documentation is required from a healthcare physician. This documentation must show the work environment or an occupational exposure played a significant role in the employee's development of an occupational illness. More information can be found under the 1904 OSHA standard.

OSHA recognizes the following work-related categories as Occupational Illnesses:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic Irreversible Diseases
  • Chronic Hearing Loss
  • Chronic Respiratory Illness or Conditions
