Music Alliance

The Moravian University Music Alliance supports the students and faculty of the Music Department of Moravian University.

Since 1987, Music Alliance members have provided funding and audiences for the music programs and have reaped the benefits of delightful concerts and participation in a myriad of activities of a thriving artistic community. The Alliance has funded scholarships, pianos, technologies, and curricular efforts.

The Music Alliance has brought professional musicians to campus to perform concerts that are enjoyed by regional audiences and to provide master classes that provide invaluable instruction for Moravian University music students. The Alliance has enabled the institution to improve the facilities and provide instruments that otherwise would be unavailable through regular budgets and assistance.

History

The Moravian University Music Alliance, founded in 1987, provides funding and audience support for students and areas of the curriculum that are not covered by departmental budgets. Support ranges from opening year Alliance/student/faculty picnics to master classes with Metropolitan Opera guest artists to Steinway pianos.

Music Alliance members host dinners, recitals, gourmet cooking classes, and parties while interacting with the faculty and students at Moravian University.

Moravian University is a four-year, selective, co-educational liberal arts college founded in 1742. The college offers 48 areas of major study leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Music degree. Certification programs in elementary and secondary education are available, as well as art and music education certificate programs.

Moravian University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Department offers two programs, the Bachelor of Arts with a major in Music and the Bachelor of Music with a concentration in music education, composition, performance (vocal, instrumental, or jazz), or sacred music.

Programs

General Fund

The General Fund of the Music Alliance supports programs, scholarships, renovation, and restoration of facilities and instruments, travel, and student activities not covered by the Music Department budgets. The Music Alliance has funded music education workshops and master classes by pianists Robert Taub and Mikhail Yanovitsky, cross-over trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, and early music specialist Andrew Manze.

Great Artists Series Fund

The Great Artists Series Fund has brought distinguished performing artists to Moravian University since 1997, including Marilyn Horne, Paul Plishka, Yo-Yo Ma, Frederica Von Stade, Denyce Graves, Samuel Ramey, and Wynton Marsalis.

Richard & Monica Schantz Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Richard & Monica Schantz Music Scholarship Endowment Fund, established in 2003 for the 75th birthday of professor emeritus and former Music Department chair Dick Schantz, adds an enduring and substantial benefit to the lives of Moravian University students. The fund celebrates the legacy of Monica and Dick Schantz, who helped establish the University's Bachelor of Music program, led the restoration of the 1748 Brethren's House and the building of Foy Concert Hall, fostered Moravian University's accreditation as an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music., and co-founded the Music Alliance.

Piano Fund

The Piano Fund to date has financed the purchase of Steinway pianos as part of a program to make the Music Department an All-Steinway facility. This fund directly supports the curricular requirement of piano proficiency for all music majors and brings to the college the benefits of affiliation with the world’s foremost piano manufacturer.

All Supporter benefits, plus four Christmas Vespers tickets; discounts for Bethlehem dining

All Contributor benefits, plus Delta Omicron Performance Class, and special events and trips

All Basic benefits, plus advance notification of the concert ticket sales
