Release to the Environment

Moravian University follows a strict environmental policy to reduce its negative impact on the environment. Part of this program is to prevent any spilling, leaking, pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying, discharging, injecting, escaping, leaching, dumping, or disposing into the environment of a hazardous or toxic chemical or extremely hazardous substance as outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EHS department routinely processes and safely removes all hazardous wastes generated by the university including chemical and biohazard wastes.

If in an event of a spill, follow the following steps:

  • Shutdown the lab or work and report the spill immediately.
  • Contain the substance to the workplace or station.
  • Depending on the chemical or substance spilled, be prepared to follow emergency procedures.
  • For life-threatening emergencies, always call 911 and refer to the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for first aid treatment.
  • Faculty and Staff are trained to clean up chemical spills, students are prohibited unless directed to do so under their supervision.
  • Contact EHS to report the spill and have it removed.
