Other Non-Cash Gifts
Do you have an another idea for a future gift for Moravian? The Department of Development & Alumni Engagement has the experience and expertise to handle a multitude of other gift types. To learn more about each option listed below, click on the link or contact the Department of Development & Alumni Engagement.
Stocks, Bonds, and Mutual Funds
- Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds that have increased in value and have been held for over one year are some of the most popular assets to use when giving a gift to Moravian University. Giving a gift of appreciated securities to us offers you the chance to support Moravian while realizing important benefits for yourself. When you donate appreciated securities to us that you have held for more than one year, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains taxes on the transfer. You may also be entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of the transfer.
- An endowment gift to Moravian University today provides a brighter future for our students. When you give an endowed gift, you give a gift with both immediate and long-term benefits. Endowment donations are invested and a portion of the annual income from the investment is used to address the purpose of your Fund. The principal remains invested and is never touched to ensure your fund lasts in perpetuity.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)
- Giving a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a special opportunity for those 70½ or older. You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Moravian University and avoid having to pay income taxes on those dollars. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference at Moravian.
- A donor advised fund (DAF) is like a charitable savings account and gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Moravian University and other qualified charities. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact, use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts, or designate Moravian as a future beneficiary of funds remaining in your DAF.
- Benefit from the tax savings that result from supporting Moravian University without giving up the assets you would like your family to receive someday with a gift in the form of a charitable lead trust.
- A unique way of giving to Moravian, a gift of real estate helps fuel our mission for years to come, while also helping you! There are a variety of options when it comes to making a gift of real estate and all require careful planning. Please contact Moravian’s Department of Development & Alumni Engagement to ensure your potential gift is in compliance with our gift acceptance policy guidelines.
“
I had a CD insured at $100K with rollover at 1%. [Retired Director of Planned Giving] Patti Price said the endowment would typically grow at a rate greater than that, and the scholarship award payout would be approximately 4%. With my teacher’s retirement plus annuity and social security, I don’t have to make use of any other income streams. At my age, you have a required minimum distribution (RMD), and the scholarship is where I designate my full RMD annually.”
