Moravian College announces plans to reopen campus for fall 2020

The plans in development will include updated scheduling, safety policies, and procedures

BETHLEHEM, PA, May 28, 2020: Today, Moravian College announced plans to reopen campus for the fall 2020 semester and welcome students back for face-to-face classes, which are scheduled to begin Monday, August 24. The fall 2020 semester will see the introduction of the HyFlex course model (dual modality) for classes, which will feature some students learning online with others in a physical classroom on campus. All faculty members are currently preparing to provide whatever is necessary to ensure that Moravian students get a truly inclusive educational experience. In addition, plans are being finalized for housing, dining, and other on-campus facilities to provide a safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff through additional sanitizing measures, reconfigured spaces, and new policies.

“Our faculty and staff are working with Apple and our partners at Extension Engine to build cutting-edge courses that employ the best in integrated pedagogies so that we will be able to deliver a great education,” said Bryon Grigsby, president of Moravian College. “We know the pandemic situation is fluid and could change quickly, but we’re building contingency plans to be prepared and at this point we’re thrilled to welcome students back to campus. We are also very grateful that our partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network brings us a level of expertise that is usually only seen at much larger universities with medical schools.”

Moravian College has developed a Plan for Fall 2020 that will inform the college community of the college’s status and will line up the phases and plans for reopening with other Northampton County businesses, per the mandates from the Governor’s Office, which has indicated that Northampton County will move to the yellow phase on June 5.

The fall 2020 semester will see the elimination of the traditional fall break and on-campus classes will end with the Thanksgiving break. Students will be encouraged to stay on campus during the semester in an effort to limit any potential exposure to family members.  Student athletes will be permitted to practice and play scheduled games, without spectators, during the fall, and regular testing will be conducted prior to visiting any campus for a game.
