BETHLEHEM, PA., April 23, 2018: Today, Moravian College announced that it will host Dr. Rebecca L. Sandefur, associate professor of sociology and law, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and faculty fellow, American Bar Foundation for the InFocus program titled “HEALTH AND CIVIL JUSTICE: Emerging Opportunities and Persistent Challenges” on Monday, April 23 on the Main Street Campus in Prosser Auditorium. The event is part of the Moravian College InFocus program, which in the 2017-2018 academic year includes a focus on how a culture’s particular system of production affects the scope and nature of its resources, and how these decisions ultimately influence health outcomes across a society.
Dr. Sandefur is acting as a “bridge speaker” for the Moravian College InFocus program, helping bridge the transition from this year's InFocus theme of Health and Healthcare, to next year's theme of War, Peace, and a Just Society.
“Most people don’t understand what drives health outcomes,” commented Dr. James Teufel, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of public health at Moravian College. “They believe the influences are all medical, and that’s fundamentally not true.”
Dr. Sandefur will share her research of ordinary people’s experiences with common problems that could bring them into contact with the civil justice system. Dr. Sandefur will also demonstrate how enhanced access to civil-legal aid can improve an individual’s health outcomes.
This is event is free and open to the public.
