Bethlehem, Pa., September 15, 2015—Moravian College will take part in the national celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.  The College will offer a series of free events open to the Moravian College community that will highlight and honor the many contributions Hispanic Americans have made to our society.

The festivities began this week with a visit to the Mexican Independence Day Festival at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. Participants were given the chance to celebrate Mexican independence through traditional music, food, dance, and crafts.

The month-long celebration continues with “Code Switching: English + Spanish = Spanglish,” a presentation by Moravian College’s Latino Student Union in the Laros Room of the Haupert Union Building at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 17.

On Sunday, September 20, the college community is invited to commemorate the national celebration at the Hispanic Heritage Month Community Dinner in Moravian Theological Seminary's Bahnson Center on Locust Street.

On Monday, September 28, author Sonia Nazario will give the celebration’s keynote address. Nazario is the author of “Enrique’s Journey,” the national bestseller about a Honduran boy on a quest to find his mother in the United States. The speech will be held at 7 p.m. in the Haupert Union Building’s Prosser Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

The celebration will come to an end in October with two final events. Beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday, October 5, join Moravian College’s Spanish Club at Dean Hunt’s home on Main Street for “Hungry for Heritage.” Registration is required and participants can sign up at any of the Spanish Club meetings, which are held Mondays at 3 p.m. in the Haupert Union Building.

Sarah White, a graduate of Moravian College’s Class of 2011, will hold the month’s final event on Thursday, October 8 at 7 p.m. in the Haupert Union Building’s UBC Room. Entitled “Moving Beyond Borders,” White will discuss her recent research pertaining to stereotypes on immigration. Dinner will be served and registration is required.
