Chemical Waste

The disposal of chemical waste generated by Moravian University is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Environmental Health and Safety Department is responsible for the pickup and disposal of such waste listed below. When waste is ready to be picked up, please complete the Chemical Waste Pickup Form.

A member of EHS will collect the waste once the form is submitted.

Laboratory Waste:

Moravian University's School of Natural Sciences produces several different types of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. Faculty and staff are specifically trained in Hazardous Communication to classify and dispose of laboratory waste under the University's Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Non-Hazardous Waste:

Chemical waste that does not pose a significant health hazard or environmental risk are considered non-hazards. Some non-hazardous waste can be treated and safely disposed down a drain while others cannot be safely treated will have to be properly deposed. 

Always consult with a faculty or staff member first to determine if a non-hazardous waste needs to be picked up by the EHS.

Non-Specific Waste:

In the rare occasion some chemical containers and wastes cannot be properly identified for various reasons such as missing or unreadable labels. These chemicals must be treated as hazardous and be properly disposed of. All attempts must be made to determine the contents of a non-specific waste before requesting a chemical waste pickup.

EHS reserves the right to refuse a pickup for non-specific waste and will work with the individual or department to determine the contents.
