Travel Experience
Education in the US Virgin Islands
Spring Break 2024: February 25, 2024 to March 3, 2024
The US Virgin Islands is a group of three main islands (St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas) and several smaller islands located in the Caribbean Sea. The islands are known for their beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant culture. Students who choose to travel to the US Virgin Islands will have the opportunity to experience a new culture, learn about the education system in the islands, and explore the natural beauty of the Caribbean. Partnering with the School of Education at the University of the US Virgin Islands, we will learn about the differences and similarities between the education system in the islands and our own experiences. Students can also explore the challenges and opportunities facing educators and students in the US Virgin Islands. Apart from academics, students will have plenty of opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the islands, taking part in activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, and kayaking.

TENTATIVE Itinerary
All the major activities mentioned in this itinerary will happen as long as weather and other outside influences allow. Some changes may be made in the order they will be visited depending upon the weather and availability.
Day 1: Travel from Newark Airport to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. We will participate in a welcome dinner.
Day 2: We will participate in an day tour of the island. There will be an option to visit a Moravian Church.
Day 3: We will have our fist day at a school visit. Here, we will engage with our hosts, teachers, and students. We will have free time afternoon to visit a local beach including a dive opportunity for students with PADI certification (extra cost for scuba).
Day 4: We will participate in a mangrove kayak tour and with lunch and snorkeling adventure to explore the enchanting allure of the island shoreline, vibrant coral reefs, and (hopefully) observe sea turtles thriving in their native environment.
Day 5: We will visit another school site and participate in a discussion with teachers, preparing our service project. In the afternoon, we will visit the tropical Botanical Gardens and explore local flora and fauna.
Day 6: As a group, we will take a ferry ride to neighboring St. John where we will spend the day on a tour of the island, complete with a beach stop and snorkeling opportunity.
Day 7: We will work on our service project for the school and have the option of working with students. There will be a free evening for students to explore or relax.
Day 8: We will have a relaxing morning with options for visiting a beach, exploring the island, or joining the trip leaders for a hike. In the evening, we will have a goodbye barbeque where we will invite some of our friends/hosts from the week.
