Moravian College Hosts Panel of Community Leaders to Discuss Public Service

Bethlehem, Pa., March 27, 2015—A group of community leaders will visit Moravian College for a panel discussion, "Public Service, Public Life, Public Good," on Tuesday, April 7 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Haupert Union Building. The public is invited to attend and admission is free of charge.

The panel will include Pat Browne, Pennsylvania Senate Appropriations Committee Chairperson; John Callahan, former Mayor, City of Bethlehem; Director of Business Development, Florio, Perrucci, Steinhardt, and Fader; Jane Ervin, former Lehigh County Executive; CEO/President, Community Services For Children, Inc.; Lou Greenwald, Democratic Majority Leader, New Jersey State Assembly; and Moderator: J. William Reynolds, President, Bethlehem City Council.

The group will discuss topics such as motivation for entering public life; the political process; elements of public life in most need of change; the the impact of money on politics; and gender and race in in politics/

Pat Browne received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and a law degree from Temple University. Browne was a CPA accountant prior to his legislative service. He was first elected to the Senate following a special election in April of 2005 and was re-elected in the fall of 2006 and 2010. Before joining the Senate, Senator Browne represented the 131st District for 10 years as a member of the state House of Representatives.

John Callahan attended the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government Executive Program on Leadership in the 21st Century, and the Transition and Leadership for New Elected Mayors Program. Callahan was the Mayor of Bethlehem from 2004- until 2012. He was the Recipient of the 2009 Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence and also the past President of Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities. Callahan serves on the Board of Directors for Lehigh Valley Industrial Park, Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, and the Minsi Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Jane Ervin is a former Lehigh County executive that is now currently the CEO/President of Community Services For Children, Inc. She has decided to resign at the end of this year, having had the position since 2007. The organization runs a number of programs throughout the Lehigh Valley, including Head Start.

Lou Greenwald has represented New Jersey’s 6th Legislative District since 1996. He currently serves as the Assembly Majority Leader. During his service in the General Assembly, Majority Leader Greenwald has compiled a significant legislative record. Greenwald graduated with a B.A. in 1989 from Moravian College in Political Science and was awarded a J.D. in 1992 from the Seton Hall University School of Law.

J. Williams Reynolds has been a Bethlehem city councilman since 2008 and is currently the council President. He is a history and government teacher at Allen High School and a former state legislative aide. Reynolds was first elected nearly eight years ago as the youngest councilman in the city's history and he plans on running for a third term in the next election.
