Areas of Research and/or Expertise

Dr. Baxter's research and teaching interests center on the role of creativity and experience in nurturing children's artistic development. She has written for journals such as the International Journal of Art and Design Education, Art Education, Teaching Artist Journal, and School Arts and published her first book in 2009 entitled, Recollections of family photographs from five generations: The role of narrative and reflexivity in organizing experience (Saarbrucken, Germany: VDM Verlag Publishers). Her artwork has been in galleries at Columbia University in New York City and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is on the executive board of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association.

Biography

Kristin Baxter, assistant professor of art, completed her degrees at New York University (B.A., liberal arts), Case Western Reserve University in collaboration with the Cleveland Museum of Art (M.A., art history and museum studies), and Teachers College Columbia University (Ed.D., art and art education). Baxter is the head of the Art Education program at Moravian and has taught courses in all levels of art education, as well as modern art history and a first-year seminar, Exploring Art in Museums. She serves as the academic adviser to all art education majors and to a group of first-year seminar students. She initiated Moravian's student chapter of NAEA, National Art Education Association, and serves as the chapter's adviser. She has directed four SOAR projects and developed Moravian's Summer Art Camp, which began in 2012. She is a board member of PAEA, Pennsylvania Art Education Association, and is co-chairing the 2013 annual conference; she has presented at many NAEA and PAEA conferences.

Baxter is a member of the New Bridge Group and exhibits her work widely throughout the region. She has studied encaustic painting, weaving, and other fine art media at R & F Handmade Paints, Kingston, New York; Art Students League, Vytlacil Campus, Sparkill, New York; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine; Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey.

Baxter has worked as an art educator in museums and schools, teaching art and art history to children, families, and teachers. In higher education, she has worked as an adjunct professor of art education and art history at universities in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. She is the author of numerous articles on using studio-art-practice-as-research and the educational value of incorporating family snapshots in art education. Her first book, Recollections of Family Photographs from Five Generations: The Role of Narrative and Reflexivity in Organizing Experience was published in the fall of 2009.

Activities of Note

2013 

  • Kristin Baxter is co-chair of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association Annual Conference, "Forging a Strong Future: Reflect, Refine, Reignite", being held in Bethlehem October 18 to 20. The gala reception for the event, including the opening for a student exhibition in Payne Gallery, is being held at Moravian University on October 19.

2010

  • Kristin Baxter, assistant professor of art, recently presented two papers at the (2010) Conference for the National Art Education Association in Baltimore. She presented "Initiating Social Justice through Interdisciplinary Curriculum: Preservice Classroom Teachers Create Collaborative Art for Life Exhibition" with one of her students, Kristine George. Professor Baxter also presented "The Balancing Act: Re-Examining the Leadership Role through the Scholarly Lives of Novice Moms." Her co-presenters for that paper were Ami Kantawala Worah (Columbia University), Borim Song (East Carolina University), and Margaret Walker (University of Maryland).
  • A research review by Kristin Baxter, assistant professor of art, appeared in Teaching Artist Journal (volume 7, number 3, July-September 2009). Dr. Baxter's "Implications of Metaphorical Thinking for Teaching Artists" examines Daniel Serig's 2006 research, "A Conceptual Structure of Visual Metaphor" (Studies in Art Education, 47(3) 229-247.)

2009

  • Kristin Baxter, assistant professor of art, has published a new book, Recollections of Family Photographs from Five Generations: The Role Narrative and Reflexivity in Organizing Experience (2009). The book presents her recent research into the ways in which art and museum educators can use family snapshots in their curricula. Educators learn how family photographs may be used to nurture learners who recognize how their personal narratives give structure to their lives and through which connections to broader cultural contexts are made evident.
