Two Students from Freedom and Liberty High Schools to receive 4-year full-tuition scholarships to Moravian University
BETHLEHEM, PA, March 30, 2022: In ceremonies held on Friday, March 25, Moravian University announced the two winners of the 2022 Bethlehem Area School District (BASD) Superintendent’s Scholarship. Started in 2016, the BASD Superintendent’s Scholarship provides four year, full-tuition scholarships to one student from Freedom High School and one from Liberty High School, both located in Bethlehem, PA. Genesis Hernandez, a graduating senior at Freedom High School and Shayaan Farhad, a graduating senior at Liberty High School, were the students chosen by a panel, which includes representatives from their respective high schools and Moravian University.
“We’re excited to announce the 2022 winners of the Superintendent’s Scholarship have been chosen and we’re proud that they’ve persevered through the events of the past two years to stay on track and excel academically,” said Bryon Grigsby, president of Moravian University. “As past BASD scholarship winners have shown, this opportunity opens doors to students who otherwise might not have the chance to attend a school like Moravian, and we expect great things from both of them.”
Genesis Hernandez will be a first-generation college student, is a member of the National Honor Society, sings in the Freedom Chorus, has been employed for two years at Kirkland Village in Bethlehem and participates in BASD's School to Work Program. Hernandez has earned a 3.92 GPA at Freedom High School.
Shayaan Farhad is the son of immigrants and is a captain of the Liberty Tennis Team, winning both an East Penn Conference and District XI title. Farhad is also a member of the Liberty High School Debate Team, volunteers with the Muslim Association of Lehigh Valley, volunteers to teach conversational Persian and Arabic, and assists in the care of his elderly grandmother. Farhad has earned a 4.35 GPA at Liberty High School.
“Students like Genesis and Shayaan have demonstrated the best qualities of BASD students; determination, commitment to family and a strong desire to succeed,” said Dr. Joseph Roy, superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District. “Moravian University is lucky to have them both and I look forward to seeing them take advantage of the opportunities presented to them in a university setting.”
