BETHLEHEM, PA, March 30, 2021: Today, Moravian College announced that Bethlehem Mayor Bob Donchez will serve as the keynote speaker at both of the 2021 commencement ceremonies celebrating the conclusion of the college’s 279th academic year. The 2021 commencement ceremonies are being held on Saturday, May 8 at John Makuvek Field on the historic Main Street Campus of Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.
As part of the commencement ceremonies on May 8, President Bryon Grigsby will award Mayor Bob Donchez the Moravian College Presidential Medal, which honors those individuals who exemplify the ideals and who have made exceptional contributions that represent the college’s vision, mission, and core values.
“Mayor Donchez has been an excellent partner and advocate for the city of Bethlehem and its residents and Moravian College and our students since the day he took office,” commented Bryon Grigsby, president of Moravian College. “We’re so glad he accepted our invitation to speak as well as the Presidential Medal for his dedication to the college, our students and alumni. The Mayor’s long career in education certainly gives him unique insight into how these new graduates have persevered to get to their big day.”
Mr. Donchez, the Mayor of Bethlehem since 2014, is a retired educator who taught American Government for thirty-five years at William Allen High School in the Allentown School District. Donchez currently serves on the boards of the Bethlehem Economic Development Corporation, Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, Lehigh Valley Industrial Park, Lehigh Valley Partnership, and is an honorary board member of the Hispanic Center of the Lehigh Valley.
Mayor Donchez added “Moravian College is an invaluable partner to the City of Bethlehem, and it is truly an honor to be commencement speaker for such an outstanding institution of higher learning.”

Moravian College leadership will closely monitor the COVID situation in Bethlehem and Pennsylvania, and is prepared to adjust plans for commencement if necessary. In the event of severe weather, commencement ceremonies will be modified and be held in Johnston Hall on the Main Street campus.
